23 September- Pursuit Races

In Ufa the second day of competition has been completed. Medals were awarded in the four sprint races. Russians again took gold in all of the races. Tomorrow, the 23rd of September the Championship concludes with the pursuit races, beginning at 10:00 A.M.

PURSUIT
WHAT IS IT?
It is a staggered start race. It is a 10 km race for Women and the Female Juniors. It is a 12.5 km race for the Men and Male Juniors. All pursuit races have 4 shooting rounds.
 
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE RACE?
The biathletes start in the order in which they finished the sprint race. The time handicap is determined by how long after the sprint winner each competitor finished. All biathletes complete 5 laps of the course, 2.5 km each lap for the male competitors and 2 km each lap for the female competitors.
 
WHAT ABOUT SHOOTING?
There are 4 shooting rounds in all pursuit races. The first 2 are in the prone position, rounds 3 and 4 are from the standing position. For every missed target the competitors have to do a penalty loop of 150 meters.
 
WHEN WAS THE FIRST PURSUIT RACE?
The first pursuit race was held at the 11th Summer Biathlon World Championships in Ufa in 2006.
